MCCI to tackle global warming

Friday, May 04, 2007

AS MANDAUE City continues to become highly industrialized, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) will initiate the move to educate industrial firms on addressing global warming.
"The European Union and the United Nations (UN) are very vocal about it. Mandaue City has a lot of factories, I think we need to strongly address the problem of global warming," said MCCI president Eric Mendoza.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, the chamber will tap the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to push for awareness in the business community and to learn technical knowledge in the prevention of global warming.
Global warming is an increase in the near surface temperature of the Earth. The term is most often used to refer to the warming predicted to occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases.

While total elimination of carbon monoxide in the City is almost impossible, Mendoza said factories will instead be taught to reduce the emission.
"I think there will also be a foreign funding for DENR about this," he said, adding the chamber's plan of tapping foreign agencies for direct assistance.
According to Mendoza, environmental issues, along with supply chain management policy, corporate best practice in dealing with global competition will be among the highlights of the Mandaue Business Month this year.

Competitiveness

While many business establishments have mushroomed in the City, he believes businessmen can strengthen their competitiveness by reinforcing efforts to develop their corporate social responsibility.
Mendoza, along with DENR 7 Director Allan Arranguez, and MCCI members gathered Wednesday for MCCI's 1 st General Membership Meeting at the City Sports Club Cebu.
With the theme "MCCI and TNT: Helping save the world, one step at a time," the meeting highlighted the partnership of MCCI and UN through TNT Express Worldwide Philippines Inc.

The partnership aims to bring food and aid and to address hunger issues among poor countries worldwide.

In line with this, is a fund-raising activity dubbed "Walk the World in Cebu." (MMM)
